Building on the Indoctrination phase, the second phase focuses on learning Air Force history, basic combat skills, and the importance of cross-cultural competence in relation to the Air Force mission. As the name implies, phase three of OTS incorporates practical application of the knowledge gained during the first two phases.
Candidates will have the opportunity to apply their leadership skills by training the new lower class and lead peers through officer trainee wing positions. However, if you do not receive it, you can find it here and at the bottom of this article. The Dorm Manual is your complete how-to for everything in the dorms. You will be expected to adhere to the dorm manual throughout OTS and will be inspected periodically to ensure that your room is neat, clean, organized, and standardized.
In my experience, the dorm inspections were typically announced a few days in advance and, as long as you follow the dorm manual, you will pass these with relative ease. Pay close attention to the details the written explanations- the pictures are deceiving and often incorrect as there are specific positions for everything.
The best advice I can suggest is to print out the dorm manual before arriving at OTS and start working on getting your dorm inspection-ready as soon as you arrive. Depending on your specific demographic, you will have a number of required documents that you should have with you when you arrive at OTS. I will post the required document list below the packing list.
Maxwell AFB, Ala. Back to Contents Pre-course Material Approximately 2 weeks prior to your OTS start date, you will receive an email from wings holmcenter. The Air Force PT test is comprised of four components: aerobic, body composition, push-ups and sit-ups. Air Force photo by Airman 1st Class Charles Welty OTS is a large group of very different people shoved into close proximity, put under stress, and kept mildly sleep-deprived; the majority of people will eventually get sick.
It would not make financial sense for you to purchase any ABU clothing. While it is highly recommended to purchase three pairs of uniforms, keep in mind that everything you purchase will be in your dorm room and, accordingly, inspectable during dorm inspections.
As long as you do laundry regularly, you should be fine with two. Full disclosure: I had 3 pairs but I really only ever wore 2 during any week. For example, Air Force pilots need to further their education and training before serving in full duty. You need to have a four-year college degree before the Air Force will consider an application to Officer Training School.
Air Force OTS is a demanding training program that lasts a little under ten weeks and helps develop your leadership skills. Becoming an Air Force Officer improves your pay and benefits, but does require you to manage enlisted personnel and make a lot of tough decisions.

The number of officers commissioned through OTS fluctuates wildly as their numbers are largely influenced by the amount of graduating cadets through the Academy and AFROTC, as well as being the first place the Air Force cuts when they have a surplus of cadets through the other two sources.
Conversely, OTS can be hard to get into during years of contraction within the national defense establishment in general and the Air Force in particular, such as the mid and late s following the end of the Vietnam War and associated USAF force structure reductions or the post- Cold War era and its associated defense reductions of the early and mids. During these periods of contractions, OTS produces few officers, making selection for the OTS program particularly difficult and competitive for college graduates, especially those with no prior enlisted service, particularly USAF enlisted service..
OTS is divided into two subset programs. Basic Officer Training BOT is the more traditional 9 - 10 week pre-commissioning program for non-prior service college graduates, as well as active duty enlisted, Air Force Reserve enlisted, Air National Guard enlisted and former enlisted personnel with college degrees at the baccalaureate level degree or higher who wish to become Air Force officers. BOT serves all active and reserve component line officers except judge advocates. Commissioned Officer Training COT is a 5-week program, primarily focused on terminal degreed professionals i.
COT serves all active, reserve and air national guard non-line officers and judge advocates. BOT is highly competitive, with recent boards circa - having selection rates below twenty percent. Non-technical degrees are more common, and therefore applying with a degree in such a field is very competitive.
Applicants can apply for rated or non-rated positions. Areas of instruction include military customs and courtesies, military history , leadership, field exercises, drill and ceremonies, small arms training, and combatives. The focus is on physical training, drill and ceremonies, and standardization. OTs will be expected to work with their fellow flight and squadron members to accomplish specific tasks as required by their Flight Commander and OT upperclassmen.
